Crobalt® was a major producer of Cast Cobalt Base Cutting Tools and Wear Materials for approximately 45 years. Crobalt® was established in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1919. The company was privately owned until a death in the family led to its dissolution in 1973. Illinois Carbide Tool Company then purchased the company along with their equipment, manufacturing technology, product formulations, specifications and a great deal of customer and end-product information. The new owner of Crobalt®moved the entire facility to Waukegan, Illinois.

By a quirk of fate, another leading manufacturer of Cast Cobalt Cutting Tools moved their facility away from Waukegan, Illinois, to a location approximately a thousand miles away. This move left a wealth of unemployed and experienced skilled personnel who, for one reason or another, chose not to or could not move. A short time later Crobalt® was resurrected. The “New” Crobalt®is now a blend of two leading Cast Cobalt Alloy manufacturers: the manufacturing technology and equipment, technical and product information of one cast alloy manufacturer, coupled with skilled, knowledgeable and production-oriented people of another.

Crobalt’s® parent company, Illinois Carbide Tool Company, a manufacturer of specialty carbide cutting tools for industry, celebrates 53 years in business at the time of this printing.
